Exciting news for Sony camera owners. Back in August, Sony released desktop app that will allow you to use your Sony alpha series camera as a webcam! Imaging Edge Webcam joins its sibling, Imaging Edge Mobile, to give your camera more functionality.

Personally, this is great for me. I became a Sony camera guy about two years ago and I have really been enjoying the video capabilities the camera offers. I have been shooting in The Project Cave for a while but have been looking to expand shooting in my office. I do not have a webcam on my desktop so I was always a little disappointed that I could not use my a6500 as one.
While doing some research the other day, there are a few sites that have a work around, but they were not a real solution. This app from Sony is. It allows the camera to used natively as a webcam. No messy work arounds. That is awesome. The image looks better than a cheap webcam and functions much better in low light. A family member recently my background looks like what they are seeing on TV. To me, that is high praise.
If you spend a lot of time in Zoom and other video conference meetings, this will make you look a lot better. However, just like a webcam, you need make sure you test your camera’s field of view. You don’t want to show everyone that you are still only wearing pajama bottoms.
I will post some pictures of my setup soon. It is still a bit of a work in progress.
